SalineType of Breast Augmentation

Saline implants can be placed inside the body before they are filled with sterilized saltwater, giving them a unique advantage. They can be inserted using the smallest incisions possible, leading to minimized scarring. Another benefit of using saline implants is that each implant can be filled to a custom capacity, which can help to offset asymmetry. If they rupture, the harmless saline inside the implants is simply absorbed by the body. Saline implants are sometimes also chosen because they are more cost effective than silicone.

Silicone GelType of Breast Augmentation

Approved and updated for safety by the FDA in 2006, silicone implants are pre-filled with a soft gel that resembles human breast tissue. They are known for being highly authentic in terms of their look and feel. The drawback of silicone is that while the implants may maintain their overall shape, a woman may not know right away that an implant has ruptured. MRIs are recommended every three years to make sure there hasn’t been a “silent rupture”.

Structured SalineType of Breast Augmentation

Filled with sterile saltwater, these implants contain structure inside that allows them to hold their shape better than traditional saline-filled implants. In this respect, they are similar to silicone gel-filled implants. Structured saline implants were approved by the FDA in 2015.

Gummy BearType of Breast Augmentation

Cohesive silicone gel-filled implants are also known as form stable implants and gummy bear implants. They are filled with a thicker, firmer, cohesive gel made of cross-linked molecules of silicone, and they hold their shape better than other implant types. Gummy bear implants were FDA approved in 2012.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Several variables will need to be determined before surgery, such as the shape and size of your implants (silicone or saline), the incision placement (inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary, or transumbilical), and the implant position (submuscular or subglandular).

An in-depth physical evaluation will be performed, at which point Dr. Kahng can make his best recommendations and create a personalized surgical plan that will meet your needs. Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1-3 hours.

Implant Placement

Subglandular

Implants placed subglandularly will sit below the breast tissue but above the pec muscles. It is important that women choosing this placement have sufficient breast tissue to cover the implants. There is a shorter surgery time and recovery period with subglandular implant placement, and larger cup sizes can be well accommodated. The doctor will perform a physical evaluation prior to surgery to determine if this is the best approach in your individual case.

Submuscular

With submuscular placement, the implants rest below both the breast tissue and the pec muscles. For women with little breast tissue to provide coverage, this placement can lead to a more natural and authentic looking outcome. Submuscular placement may also help to prevent implant complications and imperfections later such as double bubble, capsular contracture, or rippling, but it does necessitate a slightly longer recovery period. Dr. Kahng will help determine the best placement for your implants during your private consultation.
