According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), BOTOX (botulinum toxin type A) is the number one minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure in the nation. In a recent year, 7 million BOTOX treatments were performed in the U.S.A.
What Is Botox?
BOTOX is a brand name for botulinum toxin type A. There are other similar products like BOTOX such as Dysport and Xeomin. When small, diluted amounts are injected directly into the muscles, it causes controlled weakening of the muscle. BOTOX blocks the signal from the nerves to the muscles.
When the muscle is weakened, it no longer contracts, and wrinkles begin to relax and soften. BOTOX has been approved by the FDA for treating moderate to severe crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows. It is also frequently used to treat other facial areas.
